Use of name for a neighborhood group?

I formed a new neighborhood group (with no legal standing) called West Village xyz. Then the manager of the property came to tell me that I cannot use the name 'West Village" because that is the property name. We are an informal group, not a non-profit organization or a formal tenant ociation. "West Village" is also the name of a street that we live on. Is it true that we cannot use the name, "Wets Village" for our group name? I find that hard to believe.
